One eyewitness, who identified herself as Funmi, described the event as frightening and criticized the airline for not providing an explanation about what caused the windshield issue at the scene.
Efforts to reach Abdullahi Musa, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), were unsuccessful as he did not answer calls or respond to text messages. Bimbo Olajide, spokesperson for the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), stated that the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) would be best positioned to address the incident. Olajide clarified that while the NSIB is tasked with investigating accidents, this situation is classified as an incident and does not fall under their purview.
Michael Achimugu, the NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, assured that he would confer with his team and follow up with our reporter but had not done so by the time of publication.
Oluwatoyin Olajide, Chief Operating Officer of Air Peace, responded angrily when asked about the incident, asserting that passenger safety was not compromised. She dismissed the reported panic, stating, “What panic for the flying public? Can you verify what you’ve just said? Why are you always very quick to publish negative news about your own?” Olajide further claimed that the incident was a minor snag, insisting that all necessary safety measures had been implemented and that the safety of passengers and equipment remains the airline’s top priority.
However, an anonymous insider within the airline confirmed the windshield issue and noted that the aircraft had been temporarily grounded as a precaution. The source clarified that the windshield had only cracked, contrary to reports of it being shattered.
