During a visit to the Anglican Bishop of Nnewi, Rt. Rev. Ndubisi Obi, Peter Obi explained his decision to allocate over ₦1.5 billion to humanitarian projects in 2024. He emphasized that his generosity stems from a genuine passion for uplifting humanity, not a desire for self-promotion.

Highlighting specific examples, the former Governor of Anambra State mentioned donations of ₦10 million each to Bishop Ephraim Ikeakor for the College of Nursing Sciences in Amichi and to Bishop Ndubisi Obi for ongoing projects at ADON College of Health Technology in Nnewi. These contributions, he noted, are part of his larger mission to address societal challenges.

Obi cited his philanthropic history as a personal fulfillment, saying, “Even before entering public life, I found joy in supporting causes that improve humanity. I was in Haiti after the earthquake, contributing to its rebuilding, and even before becoming governor, I helped communities in need within my capacity.”

Recounting his recent tour of facilities with Bishop Ndubisi, Obi spoke about visiting the Diocesan Rehabilitation Centre for drug abuse victims and a school for children with special needs. He lauded the Bishop’s commitment to serving the vulnerable, stating, “When you witness such dedication, it’s hard not to support—not for recognition, but for the sake of humanity.”

Addressing claims that his philanthropy is aimed at boosting his public image, Obi dismissed such notions. He clarified that giving back is a moral and spiritual responsibility, a way of expressing gratitude to the society that shaped him.

“As long as God blesses me with the means, I will continue to support noble causes,” he vowed.
