Former Chief of Army Staff, Retired General Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma, has urged the military leadership, led by Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) General Christopher Musa, to swiftly end the ongoing banditry and killings in Nigeria. Addressing both serving and retired military officials, including General Musa, Danjuma stressed that the current officers bear the responsibility to curb the violence perpetrated by bandits and marauders. He asserted, “We must end the banditry and the killings that are going on in our country as soon as possible. The responsibilities are on your shoulders; no excuses, absolutely no excuses. God bless you. God bless our country.”
In response, CDS General Musa assured Danjuma and attendees that the Nigerian Armed Forces are fully committed to addressing the challenges of banditry and terrorism. He emphasized the military’s dedication to restoring peace and security, stating, “The Armed Forces of Nigeria are willing, dedicated, and committed to ensuring that we restore peace and security in our country. We shall not be deterred. We have learned much from your records and will not fail.”
Nigeria’s North-West and North-Central regions have been plagued by bandits involved in kidnappings, killings, and other acts of terror. A report by SBM Intelligence indicates that approximately ₦1.04 billion was paid in ransom to kidnappers over the past year, with at least 7,568 individuals abducted in 1,130 incidents nationwide.
