The police have requested that protest organizers provide specific information, including proposed routes and assembly points, the expected duration of the protest, and the names and contact details of the leaders and organizers. This information is intended to prevent conflicts with other activities and ensure public safety.

A statement from ASP Yazid Abubakar, the police spokesperson, outlined that the stakeholders involved in these discussions included religious leaders, Nigeria Labour Congress, Trade Union Congress, student unions, NTU, Okada Union, National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), NATO, the Amalgamated Traders Association, and other significant groups.

The statement read: “Police Commissioner M.D. Shehu praised the stakeholders for their efforts in combating crime but emphasized concerns about the potential risks associated with the protest, including possible violence and disruptive motives. Some groups advocating for violent protests, citing recent events in Kenya, have raised concerns about the sincerity and potential for disorder.

“While acknowledging the right to peaceful assembly, the Command urges caution regarding the timing and impact of participating in any protest. We warn against any clandestine groups plotting to destabilize the state or individuals seeking to exploit protests for criminal activities. The police will not tolerate violence, property destruction, or looting.

“To ensure a smooth and peaceful protest, organizers must provide details on protest routes, assembly points, duration, and contact information for leaders. This will help avoid conflicts with other activities and ensure public order.

“We encourage all protesters to cooperate with the police, follow the law, and adhere to best practices for peaceful demonstrations. Residents are advised to continue their lawful activities and report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station.”

The statement concluded with praise from the stakeholders for the Command’s efforts in reducing crime, assuring that they would avoid protests that could endanger public safety and order.
