Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Thursday, NLC spokesperson Benson Upah condemned the Nigerian Communications Commission’s (NCC) proposed 50% increase in telecom tariffs, describing it as excessive. He suggested a more reasonable 5% increase to ease the economic burden on citizens.

Upah reaffirmed the NLC’s resolve to proceed with a nationwide protest on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, to oppose the tariff hike and other unfavorable government policies, warning that such adjustments would have dire consequences for ordinary Nigerians, manufacturers, and the middle class.

“This rally is aimed at stopping this reckless tariff increase,” Upah declared. “If there must be any hike, it should be no more than 5%, given the current economic realities. A 50% increase is unacceptable.”

He also questioned the impact of consistent tariff hikes on struggling Nigerians, highlighting how rising energy and communication costs are pushing manufacturers, middle-class earners, and everyday citizens to the breaking point.

“Where will ordinary Nigerians stand when energy tariffs keep increasing? Manufacturers are groaning, the middle class is groaning, and the average Nigerian can hardly afford basic utilities. Lower taxes and tariffs encourage broader compliance, unlike these high, oppressive rates,” he added.
