Enugu Police Neutralize Two Suspected ESN Members in Strategic Raid
In a recent operation, the Enugu State Police Command announced the successful neutralization of two individuals believed to be affiliated with the Eastern Security Network (ESN), associated with the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). According to DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the command’s spokesperson, this action took place during a targeted raid on an alleged ESN camp as part of the Easter crime prevention strategy implemented by CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, the Commissioner of Police for Enugu State.
During the operation, which occurred in the early hours of March 30, 2024, in the Akwuke community of Enugu South Local Government Area, the police encountered armed resistance from the suspected insurgents, identified as members of the Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad. Despite the resistance, the police were able to subdue the assailants with their superior firepower.
As a result of the confrontation, law enforcement officials recovered a cache of weapons, including an AK-47 rifle, a submachine gun (SMG), a stainless pump-action gun, along with live and expended rounds of ammunition. Notably, the breech number of the seized AK-47 rifle had been tampered with, suggesting efforts to conceal its origin.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the recovered AK-47 rifle may have been used in previous attacks on law enforcement personnel, with the rifle’s magazine bearing the colors of the Nigeria Police Force. Further inquiries are ongoing to uncover the full extent of the insurgents’ activities and their involvement in the theft of police weaponry.
CP Uzuegbu commended the efforts of the operatives involved in the successful operation and reiterated the Enugu State Police Command’s commitment to combating criminal activities in the region. He urged the public, particularly medical facilities, to report any individuals presenting with gunshot wounds, facilitating the apprehension of those who may have fled the scene.
This operation underscores the dedication of law enforcement agencies to maintain peace and security in Enugu State, urging continued cooperation from the public in combating criminal elements.
