Escaped Inmate During EndSARS Unrest Nabbed Again In Edo

The Edo State Police Command has successfully apprehended Jacob Alonge, a 58-year-old prisoner who had fled from the Benin Correctional Centre during the 2020 #EndSARS protest in the state. Commissioner of Police, CP Funsho Adegboye, confirmed this development to reporters in Benin City.

Adegboye revealed that Alonge had been serving a 21-year sentence handed down by the Edo High Court for the egregious crime of raping his own daughter, Gift Alonge. Despite the daunting challenges posed by threats and mysterious deaths of witnesses, the court convicted him. Escaping during the #EndSARS turmoil, Alonge evaded recapture until recently.

Branding Alonge as a perilous individual unfit for society, Adegboye emphasized the urgent need to re-apprehend him. Alonge’s escape occurred amid the chaos of the #EndSARS jailbreak at two custodial centers in Benin.

Acting on credible intelligence pinpointing his location in Ososo community, Akoko-Edo local government area, police operatives conducted a swift operation to arrest him. However, they encountered resistance from some locals. Despite the opposition, law enforcement prevailed, re-arresting Alonge and bringing him back into custody.

Adegboye urged community members not to harbor criminals, emphasizing the transient nature of criminal alliances. Meanwhile, Alonge confessed to escaping to his village amid the widespread chaos of the #EndSARS protests, only to be captured when police arrived at his residence.
