The legislators, led by Deputy Speaker Meranda, arrived in two white buses, while Speaker Obasa arrived separately a few minutes later. The meeting was convened to address and resolve the ongoing leadership crisis within the Assembly.
After the discussions, lawmakers were seen celebrating and chanting “On your mandate we shall stand” in support of Tinubu as he returned to his office. One of the legislators, speaking with Channels TV, confirmed that “everything has been resolved,” though no official statement has been issued regarding the meeting’s outcome.
Lagos Assembly Leadership Crisis
The crisis erupted on January 13, 2025, when Speaker Obasa was ousted by over two-thirds of the 40-member House due to alleged misconduct. His deputy, Mojisola Meranda, was swiftly elected as the new Speaker, marking a historic first as the only female Speaker in the South-West.
However, Obasa dismissed his removal, arguing that it was carried out in his absence while he was abroad.
Obasa Reinstated After Weeks of Power Struggle
Despite strong opposition from 36 lawmakers backing Meranda, Obasa regained his position on March 3 following Meranda’s resignation.
Meranda, representing Apapa Constituency I, voluntarily stepped down during a plenary session and was immediately re-elected as Deputy Speaker, restoring stability to the House.
