Ex-Minister Speaks Out: Why I’ve Fallen Out Of Love With Nigerian Markets

He argued that if leaders were truly innovative and proactive, the country would not be in its current state of hardship despite being richly endowed with resources.

Speaking on Monday at the Anniversary of the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) and the 2025 International Peace Day commemoration in Abuja, Gana emphasized that leadership must be driven by compassion, creativity, and sound ideas.

“But our leaders are no longer thinking. No more initiative, no more programmes,” he lamented.

He added:
“Otherwise, a country as blessed as Nigeria should not be going through the harsh realities we face today. Personally, I don’t enjoy going to the market anymore because prices keep changing almost daily, and life has become extremely difficult.”

Gana further stressed that leaders must embrace fairness and justice to prevent crises that threaten peace and stability.

He said:
“Always remember, peace delayed is peace denied. Too often, peace is wrongly defined as the absence of war. True peace is much deeper — it is justice in action, leadership with integrity, and equitable distribution of resources.

“Injustice anywhere breeds conflict. Any society that tolerates injustice should expect violent reactions sooner or later. Leaders, therefore, must pursue justice, fairness, equity, and the promotion of human dignity. Respect for life and human dignity discourages conflict and sustains peace.”
