Ex-Speaker Mamora Warns Meranda: ‘Avoid Obasa’s Mistakes As Lagos’ First Female Speaker

Former Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Olorunnimbe Mamora, has advised Mojisola Meranda, the newly sworn-in Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, to avoid the mistakes that led to the removal of her predecessor, Mudashiru Obasa.

In an interview with Vanguard following Meranda’s formal assumption of office, Mamora, who previously served as a Minister under President Muhammadu Buhari, stressed that effective leadership demands fairness, accountability, and transparency.

Meranda’s leadership marks the end of Obasa’s tenure, which ended on January 13, 2025, when 32 out of 40 Assembly members voted for his removal over allegations of misconduct and financial mismanagement.

A seasoned lawmaker and former Senator, Mamora congratulated Lagos for reaching a historic milestone with Meranda’s appointment as the state’s first female Speaker, calling it a significant step toward gender equality and a triumph for women in the state.

However, Mamora emphasized that Meranda must prove herself through exemplary leadership and by meeting the expectations of her colleagues, the Assembly, and the people of Lagos.

Milestone for Gender Equality in Lagos Leadership

Mamora hailed Meranda’s appointment as Lagos’ first female Speaker, noting that it represents a major achievement for gender equality. He added, “Lagos State already has something to celebrate. To the best of my knowledge, no other state in the country has produced more prominent deputy governors than Lagos. And now, with a female Speaker, Lagos is joining the ranks of states that have had women in this important role. This is definitely a positive step for gender equality and sensitivity.”
