Exclusive: American International School Shares Insights On Returning Yahaya Bello’s Children’s Fees To EFCC

The American International School in Abuja has clarified its decision to refund part of the tuition fees paid by former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), citing its dedication to institutional integrity and respect for Nigeria’s national institutions. Naija News reported that $760,910.84 was returned to the EFCC, out of $845,852 allegedly paid by Bello in 2021 for his children’s long-term school fees.

The refunded amount corresponds to the tuition for five of Bello’s children, originally intended to cover their education from 2021 to 2035. In a statement released on Saturday, School Head Greg Hughes emphasized the institution’s transparency and cooperation with the EFCC regarding the matter.

Hughes acknowledged that the school had accepted an advance payment for school fees, which was properly recorded, and stated that the money was returned to the EFCC in response to an investigation request. While acknowledging the sensitivity of the ongoing case between the EFCC and Yahaya Bello, the school refrained from further comments due to the case’s sub-judice status.

The statement emphasized the school’s commitment to upholding institutional integrity and respecting Nigeria’s national institutions. It clarified that the school has not been accused of any wrongdoing in relation to the case and is fully cooperating with the EFCC. As legal proceedings unfold within the Nigerian judicial system and involve one of the school’s families, the institution opted to withhold further comments.

The school reiterated its dedication to providing excellent service to its community in alignment with its core values, vision, and mission.
