Fresh details have surfaced regarding Monday’s private discussion between Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. Naija News disclosed that Obi, a former Governor of Anambra State, convened the closed-door meeting at Atiku’s residence in Abuja.

Obi also separately met with former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, and former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, fueling speculation about potential coalition efforts ahead of the 2027 general election.

In the 2019 elections, Atiku and Obi ran on the PDP joint ticket but were defeated by former President Muhammadu Buhari of the APC. However, due to internal conflicts, Obi, who served as Atiku’s running mate, later left the PDP and contested the 2023 presidential election as the LP candidate.

Confirming Obi’s visit, Atiku’s media adviser, Paul Ibe, stated to The Punch that the meeting lasted about 20 minutes. Ibe hinted at the possibility of coalition discussions for the 2027 presidential election, emphasizing that specifics of the meeting wouldn’t be disclosed to the media.

He said, “Yes, Peter Obi visited Atiku Abubakar. They met for about 20 minutes behind closed doors, so we wouldn’t know what was said, and they didn’t disclose anything to us.”

“Since Atiku Abubakar mentioned coalition discussions and such, I believe that both of them must have been engaged in dialogue. And I did mention that they wouldn’t be discussing it in the media. So, they have indeed been in discussions and it is just a matter of those discussions bearing fruit.”

On the potential for coalition talks, Ibe remarked, “Regarding the coalition talks, perhaps it is already underway. The possibility does exist.”

This development underscores ongoing political maneuvering as stakeholders position themselves for future elections.
