Contrary to earlier denials, fresh signals from Jonathan’s camp suggest the former leader is seriously weighing the option of entering the 2027 presidential race. Sources at Wadata Plaza, the PDP National Secretariat, revealed to The Nation that high-level consultations are ongoing to bring Jonathan back into full partisan politics.
Insiders disclosed that Jonathan has begun reaching out to influential Nigerians, with former President Ibrahim Babangida among those he has already visited. A close ally of Jonathan described his recent remarks in Benin—where he revisited the issue of betrayal that cost him re-election in 2015—as a calculated move to stir public sympathy.
The source argued that if Jonathan truly had no interest in contesting, it would cost him nothing to state so categorically. He compared the Benin statement to Jonathan’s famous September 2010 declaration before clinching the PDP presidential ticket ahead of the 2011 elections.
Meanwhile, Jonathan’s cousin, Robert Azibaola, has dismissed speculations that the former president had ruled himself out of the 2027 race. According to him, “Jonathan never said he would not contest in 2027. The so-called aide quoted in the publication does not exist.”
He emphasized that while Jonathan has not made an official declaration, he has equally not shut the door on a possible return.
