During the opening session, CJN Ariwoola emphasized the council’s commitment to playing a crucial role in fostering justice, peace, and integration in West Africa. He also advocated for the harmonization of laws across the ECOWAS region.
The Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, addressed the gathering, urging the ECOWAS court to refrain from issuing orders and judgments that are difficult to enforce. Fagbemi highlighted the importance of considering the unique circumstances of member states, criticizing some of the ECOWAS court judgments as practically unenforceable.
Fagbemi stressed the necessity of promoting and deepening alternative dispute resolution measures within the region to address the challenges faced by member states. The discussions during the meeting aimed at enhancing the effectiveness and enforceability of decisions made by the ECOWAS Judicial Council.
