This revelation was made during Kalu’s address at the formal inauguration of the House Committee tasked with the review of the 1999 constitution on February 26. Kalu explained that the objective behind expediting the new constitution is to afford the President ample time to carefully assess the proposed amendments before endorsing them into law, particularly amid the demanding schedule of an election year.

As reported by The Nation, Kalu noted that the House has already received proposals for bills, covering topics such as the establishment of state police, state access to mines, increased representation of women in politics, clear delineation of taxes and levies for each tier of government, and the creation of the office of the Mayor of the Federal Capital Territory Abuja.

Kalu mentioned that several bill proposals, which were previously passed but did not secure the President’s assent during the fifth constitution alterations, have been reintroduced in the ongoing amendment. These include provisions related to the powers of the National Assembly and State Assemblies to summon the President and State governors, as well as the government’s obligation to formulate policies ensuring the right to food and food security.

Highlighting the dynamic nature of the constitution review process and its significance in strengthening democracy, Kalu expressed the House’s readiness to accommodate additional proposals aimed at enhancing the Constitution and fortifying the nation’s democratic foundation. He also stated that the House is eagerly anticipating executive-sponsored bill proposals aligning with the President’s renewed hope agenda.
