The apology was officially delivered on Kanu’s behalf by his new lead counsel, Kanu Agabi (SAN), a former Attorney General of the Federation, on Friday. In a statement released that evening, Lolo Uchechi explained that Agabi’s intervention was intended to ease tensions within certain parts of the legal community after Kanu’s remarks, which were driven by anger, against Justice Nyako’s court, resulting in her recusal.
The statement, titled “Dignity in Justice Omotosho’s Court of the Federal High Court in Abuja,” was personally signed by Kanu’s wife. It read, in part: “In court today, my husband, Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, acknowledged the necessity for Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN, to address the court of Justice James Omotosho regarding the events in Justice Binta Nyako’s court, which had shaken the foundations of the Nigerian judiciary.”
The statement continued: “This clarification was properly delivered by Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN, a respected figure who has served as Attorney-General twice, Minister of Justice twice, and a former Senator.”
It explained that Agabi’s role in Kanu’s legal team was to calm the tensions caused by Kanu’s angry remarks, which led to Justice Nyako’s recusal. “Chief Kanu Agabi’s stature required him to restore decorum acceptable to the Abuja bench and the judiciary,” the statement added.
Additionally, it noted that Justice James Omotosho, presiding over the current proceedings, had also apologized to Kanu for the long delays and mishandling of his trial over the years, acknowledging the hardships Kanu faced under the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Lolo Okwu-Kanu praised Chief Agabi’s approach as strategic, managing Kanu’s anger while upholding the dignity of the court. She also urged critics to read the full text of Agabi’s statement before forming opinions, stressing that Agabi spoke in his personal capacity, advocating for a peaceful resolution and coexistence.
