Governor Alex Otti of Abia State led the festivities, publicly reading portions of the judgment. He declared that the Supreme Court had recognized Senator Usman as the legitimate leader of the party and removed the faction loyal to the embattled national chairman, Julius Abure.

Otti further disclosed that the apex court had cautioned political actors to respect the tenures stipulated in their party constitutions. He hailed the decision as a landmark victory for the Labour Party and underscored the significance of adhering to internal democratic principles.

The celebration followed last Friday’s historic Supreme Court verdict, which overturned a prior ruling by the Court of Appeal in Abuja that had affirmed Abure as national chairman.

A five-member panel of the Supreme Court ruled unanimously that the Court of Appeal lacked the jurisdiction to determine the party’s internal leadership affairs. The justices emphasized that leadership matters within political parties are internal issues that should not be decided by the courts.

The Supreme Court upheld the appeal filed by Senator Nenadi Usman and a co-appellant, declaring it valid and worthy. Conversely, the cross-appeal brought by Abure’s camp was dismissed as lacking merit.
