The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has officially announced the reopening of runway 18L/36R for flight operations. This announcement comes via a statement issued by Mrs. Obiageli Orah, FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs & Consumer Protection, on Tuesday in Lagos.
The closure of the runway earlier on Tuesday was prompted by an incident involving a Dana Air aircraft with registration number 5N-BKI, which overshot the runway during landing. FAAN’s emergency response team swiftly responded to evacuate and recover the aircraft from the site. Following this, extensive clearing operations were conducted to ensure the runway was free from any Foreign Object Debris (FOD) that could pose a risk to flight safety.
Orah highlighted that both the FAAN Operations division and the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) conducted a thorough inspection of the runway surface, affirming its safety for the resumption of operations.
Additionally, an official Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) has been issued to inform relevant parties of the runway’s reopening.
Acknowledging the challenges posed by the muddy area affected by the overshoot, concerted efforts were made to efficiently clean the area, facilitating the swift resumption of operations on Runway 18L/36R.
FAAN expressed gratitude to the traveling public, airline partners, and stakeholders for their patience, understanding, and cooperation during the temporary closure. They offered sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused by the incident, emphasizing their unwavering commitment to prioritizing the safety and security of passengers, staff, and airport operations.
