Family Of Slain NYSC Member Demands Justice As Police Apprehend Suspects

The family of Damilola Iyanda, a member of the National Youth Service Corps allegedly killed in a police shooting in the Under-G area of Ogbomoso Local Government Area, Oyo State, has demanded a thorough investigation into his death.

Lawrence Iyanda, the deceased’s uncle, expressed the family’s devastation in an exclusive interview with PUNCH Metro. Damilola was reportedly shot during a fracas that erupted at an after-party following the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, convocation ceremony.

Described as an easygoing individual who avoided trouble, Damilola had aspirations of becoming a renowned civil engineer before his untimely demise. Lawrence emphasized the shock and grief experienced by Damilola’s parents upon hearing the news.

He appealed to the Oyo State Government to ensure justice prevails in the matter, condemning the alleged actions of the involved officer.

The Oyo State Police Command, in a statement, announced the arrest of officers, including an inspector, allegedly involved in the shooting. These officers are currently detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Iyaganku, with the Commissioner of Police ordering the Homicide Department to handle the investigations.

The incident reportedly occurred following a distress call from a nightclub director, requesting police intervention against suspected cultists harassing guests. Shots were allegedly fired during the altercation, resulting in Damilola’s death and his brother’s injury.

The statement assured the public, especially the student community, of swift justice. LAUTECH also confirmed monitoring the health of their former student, Iyanda Femi Israel, who sustained injuries during the incident, expressing commitment to uncovering the truth behind the fracas.
