A disturbance erupted on Thursday morning following a tragic incident resulting in the loss of at least eighteen lives at a police checkpoint near the Lokpanta area of Abia State. Reports indicate that an 18-seater commercial bus was awaiting clearance at the checkpoint along the Umuahia-Enugu axis of the Port Harcourt Enugu Highway when a truck driver lost control, colliding with the bus and causing fatalities among the driver and passengers.

In response to the incident, residents initiated a protest, demanding the return of the police officers stationed at the checkpoint. They expressed their determination to continue protesting until Governor Alex Otti visits the scene.

An eyewitness, Bananas Okereke, conveyed to The Nation over the phone that as of 8:20 am, the scene remained strewn with the bodies of victims. He described how protesting bus drivers and other motorists had obstructed the road, calling for accountability for the officers involved in causing the accident.

Colleagues of the bus driver and other concerned individuals joined in, blocking the road and insisting on justice for the victims. Their resolve remained firm, stating that they would maintain their presence until Governor Alex Otti arrived at the scene.
