According to a relative of the deceased, Okechukwu had just deposited his late mother’s remains at the mortuary prior to the accident. The family member, who wished to remain anonymous, explained, “The incident occurred on the expressway. The deceased mistook the truck for a moving vehicle, and by the time he realized it was stationary, it was too late to avoid the collision.”
Okechukwu, who recently welcomed a newborn with his wife, married in February, is mourned deeply by his family and friends. “He had just laid his mother to rest and was preparing for her funeral. Now, he has tragically joined her in the mortuary. This incident highlights life’s unpredictability and the need to cherish every moment,” the relative added. They emphasized that the accident could have been avoided if abandoned vehicles were removed from the roadway, as the truck was positioned dangerously.
After being pronounced dead, Okechukwu’s body was taken to the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital morgue in Awka. Local residents have criticized traffic officials, including the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), for not removing the abandoned truck sooner.
In response, Joyce Alexander, the Corps Commander of the Anambra State Command, expressed condolences to Okechukwu’s family and prayed for comfort in their time of grief. She explained that the truck could not be towed due to the weight of its load, but she instructed FRSC personnel to cordon off the area with reflective tape to alert oncoming traffic at night.
“I understand he collided with a broken-down truck. Unfortunately, the incident occurred at night, and the FRSC rescue team could not obtain witness accounts. There were no indications of a tire burst; excessive speed may have contributed to the loss of control, as evidenced by the skid marks at the scene,” Alexander noted.
She acknowledged that the FRSC cannot be present everywhere and urged the public to assist by reporting accidents and obstructions through the FRSC toll-free emergency number, 122. The truck will be removed once it can be offloaded and towed away safely.
