FCT Police Reacts To Allegations Of Robbery In Abuja Traffic Captured In Viral Video

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has refuted the authenticity of a viral video depicting robbers targeting motorists at traffic lights in what was claimed to be Abuja. CP Ben Igweh, the FCT Commissioner of Police, emphasized that the footage is misleading and aimed at instigating fear and spreading misinformation among residents of the FCT and Nigerians at large.

CP Igweh has directed a thorough investigation into the origins of the video and the motives behind its circulation. He expressed dismay over the manipulation of the video to propagate false narratives and undermine the security situation in the FCT.

According to a statement by SP Josephine Adeh, the spokesperson for the FCT Police Command, forensic analysis conducted by the Nigeria Police Force – National Cybercrime Centre has uncovered significant details regarding the video. Contrary to initial assumptions, it was found that the incident captured in the video actually took place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and was posted by an individual from South Africa on X (formerly Twitter) on April 22nd, 2024. The video falsely suggests the necessity of carrying firearms for travel in Ethiopia.

The FCT Police Command reiterated its dedication to ensuring the safety and security of all residents and vowed to take appropriate legal measures to address the dissemination of false information. Citizens are urged to remain vigilant and discerning when consuming information, particularly on digital platforms.
