Speaking during his monthly media briefing on Thursday in Abuja, Wike stated that the FCT Administration had made efforts to resolve the crisis, but some demands remained impractical.
“We stepped in to address the strike, but some teachers have been unreasonable, which makes the situation challenging. I already said payments will be made in phases,” he explained.
The Minister also raised concerns about the financial burden of the current wage structure, highlighting the mismatch between the wage bill and federal allocations.
“Nearly 50,000 workers earn a total of N13 billion monthly. What does the federal government give us? Out of N800 billion, we receive just one percent — that’s N8 billion. With N8 billion, how can we pay salaries under the new minimum wage? Can it even cover allowances?” he asked.
Wike further criticized the strike action, saying: “I heard they locked the gate, yet they’ve been paid their salaries. Did anyone ask how they’re receiving salaries while shutting down public facilities?”
