Federal Government And International Labour Organization Collaborate To Enhance Social Protection Initiatives In Nigeria
The Federal Government has teamed up with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) to broaden the reach of social safety nets in Nigeria, according to a statement by Mr. Olajide Oshundun, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Labour and Employment. The collaboration, highlighted during a visit by an ILO delegation to the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Barr. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, aims to amplify the impact of social protection initiatives in Nigeria. Expressing gratitude for the visit, Minister Onyejeocha emphasized the importance of social protection for all citizens, stressing the need to expedite the implementation of vital programs like social security. She assured the ILO delegation of the Ministry’s commitment to the social protection vision, emphasizing the pivotal role of labor in poverty reduction and employment generation.
Mrs. Ngozi Anukwu, Deputy Director of the Social Security Department, highlighted the department’s active pursuit of social security responsibilities despite challenges. The ILO delegation, led by Regional Social Protection Specialist Dramane Batchabi, emphasized the urgent need to expand social protection coverage in Nigeria, where only 17% of the population currently benefits from such programs.
Batchabi pointed out the challenges faced, including low coverage, especially in the informal economy where over 80% of Nigerians operate, and funding constraints. He presented the ILO’s recommendations, urging the Ministry to leverage existing policies and institutions, such as the National Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF), to optimize interventions and streamline the social protection landscape.
In conclusion, Batchabi reiterated ILO’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s social protection efforts, emphasizing the collaborative effort required to identify sustainable funding sources for the expansion of social protection programs.
