Federal Government Announces Commencement Of Freight Operations On Lagos-Kano Rail

The Federal Government is poised to inaugurate freight services on the Lagos-Kano narrow gauge railway, aiming to bolster commercial activities and alleviate strain on the country’s roads. This update surfaced during an inspection tour led by Minister of Transportation, Saidu Alkali, to the project site in Kano State.

According to reports by Naija News, the contractors, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, verified the completion of crucial segments of the railway, including its link to the Zawaciki Dala Dry Port in Kano, a pivotal commercial center in the state.

The introduction of freight services is anticipated to not only elongate the lifespan of Nigeria’s road network but also notably diminish the occurrence of traffic accidents.

Minister Alkali expressed contentment with the swift progress observed since his previous inspection, acknowledging the tangible advancements in earthworks, culverts, and railway preparations.

He remarked, “The progress is remarkable from what I have seen since my last visit.”

Moreover, Minister Alkali divulged strategic plans to divide the project into segments to ensure prompt and efficient completion. “We are planning to segment the project by the grace of God. We are planning to put Kano-Daura next year and Daura to Maradi in 2026, and Dutse to Kano in 2026,” he elaborated.

This segmentation strategy aims to streamline operations and allocate resources effectively across various sections of the railway.

The inspection also involved a comprehensive assessment with a team from the Ministry of Transportation, engineers from the Railway Corporation, and consultants, all aimed at ensuring adherence to timelines and specifications.

The Lagos-Kano railway project forms part of a broader government initiative to fortify the country’s infrastructure, facilitating economic growth and enabling smoother movement of goods and people across key economic regions.

The incorporation of freight services is viewed as a pivotal measure in enhancing Nigeria’s logistical capabilities and alleviating strain on road transportation.
