Federal Government Announces Initiative To Lure Back 12,400 Doctors Who Left

President Bola Tinubu has approved a new National Policy on Health Workforce Migration to tackle the ongoing migration of Nigerian doctors abroad. Prof. Pate highlighted that a significant portion of Nigerian-trained doctors are in the UK, stressing that the policy aims to address the impact of this migration on Nigeria’s healthcare system. He noted that while Nigerian healthcare professionals are highly valued internationally, their departure creates challenges at home.

The policy, described by Pate as a comprehensive strategy, focuses on managing, harnessing, and reversing health worker migration. It emphasizes improving working conditions, integrating digital health technologies, and fostering professional development. The policy also includes plans for the return and reintegration of Nigerian doctors from abroad.

In addition to offering incentives for returning professionals, the policy proposes reciprocal agreements with other countries to benefit Nigeria. It also incorporates measures to support work-life balance, mental health, and reasonable working hours.

Pate stated that the policy aims to create a more supportive and efficient healthcare environment, ensuring the quality of care for all Nigerians while leveraging the expertise of health professionals from the Diaspora.

The governance of the policy will be managed by the National Human Resources for Health Programme in collaboration with state governments to ensure effective implementation and alignment with health sector objectives.
