The initiation of train services along the vital Port Harcourt to Maiduguri rail line, initially slated for late March, has been postponed by the Federal Government, with operations now scheduled to commence in April. This delay, as reported by Naija News, signifies a deviation from the original timeline and presents a temporary setback in the implementation of a key infrastructure project under the tenure of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
During an inspection visit to the Port Harcourt site on Friday, the Minister for Transportation, Saidu Alkali, revealed the adjusted timetable due to unforeseen challenges faced by the project’s contractors. Despite expressing disappointment over missing the initial deadline, Minister Alkali expressed confidence in the project’s advancement and the revised timeline for its completion.
“This is the second time I am in Port Harcourt for the inspection of the rail line since I assumed office as the Minister of Transportation,” stated Alkali, emphasizing the importance of the project. He specifically highlighted the segment from Port Harcourt to Aba, affirming that operational commencement is now firmly scheduled for April.
Furthermore, plans are underway to extend the rail line to Port Harcourt and Onne Ports to facilitate direct rail connections from these critical seaports. Minister Alkali appealed for public patience and support, reiterating the government’s commitment to fulfilling its promises and delivering substantial relief to the people through enhanced infrastructure.
