The defectors, identified as Umar Na’amore from Argungu Constituency, Hashimu Usman from Yauri Constituency, and Yusuf Abubakar-Tilli from Bunza Constituency, detailed their reasons in letters read out by the Assembly Speaker, Alhaji Muhammad Usman-Zuru, during a session in Birnin Kebbi on Tuesday.

In their letters, the former PDP members cited factionalization and division within the PDP caused by leadership mismanagement in their constituencies. They referenced constitutional provisions allowing them to join another party and retain their seats under such circumstances.

The Assembly also received a letter from Governor Nasir Idris seeking confirmation for Muhammad Ashiru-Garba as the new Chairman of the Kebbi Local Government Service Commission, following the passing of the former chairman, Mansur Shehu. Members agreed to invite Ashiru-Garba for ratification on Wednesday.

In an interview, Speaker Usman-Zuru refuted claims that the Assembly is merely a ‘rubber stamp’ due to its close alignment with the executive branch. He stated that the Assembly and Governor Idris share a common goal of development for Kebbi, emphasizing their partnership in advancing the state’s interests. He praised Governor Idris for his dedication to Kebbi’s growth and economic prosperity, and assured that the Assembly remains committed to its oversight role.
