In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, through his media aide Rabiu Ibrahim, underscored the critical role of journalistic integrity in shaping public perception through accurate reporting. He emphasized that news outlets must adhere strictly to professional standards to ensure fair and balanced coverage.

“The public expects news organizations to uphold professional ethics by ensuring their reporting is factual, fair, and balanced. This adherence can help avoid harmful reporting, such as that by Daily Trust,” the statement read.

The Federal Government recognized that while a free press is fundamental to democracy, this freedom comes with the responsibility to report news accurately and without misinformation. “Only through a commitment to truth can the media effectively hold the government and institutions accountable,” the statement continued.

The NMCC’s recommendations included directing Daily Trust to publicly apologize for its false report and to implement measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. The government welcomed this guidance, reaffirming its commitment to transparency and proactive information dissemination regarding public interest issues.

Idris urged media organizations to maintain ethical standards and collaborate to provide accurate information, which is essential for fostering an informed citizenry. He reiterated, “The Federal Government appreciates the NMCC’s recommendations, including the directive for Daily Trust to issue a public apology for its false report on the Samoa Agreement.”

The NMCC released a report following its investigation into a complaint lodged by the Ministry of Information and National Orientation against Daily Trust. On July 4, 2024, the newspaper published a front-page article titled “LGBT: Nigeria Signs $150 Billion Samoa Deal,” inaccurately suggesting that the Federal Government had endorsed a European Union partnership agreement known as the Samoa Agreement with member states of the Organisation of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States.

The 19-page report concluded that the Daily Trust’s story was inaccurate. However, the NMCC also criticized the Federal Government for its poor handling of issues surrounding the Samoa Agreement, stating that greater openness and accountability could have mitigated speculation and conjecture regarding the deal.

Despite these criticisms, the Ombudsman ordered Daily Trust to apologize for the inaccuracies in its report on the Samoa Agreement, marking a significant moment for journalistic accountability in Nigeria.
