With the deteriorating security conditions and the abduction of several corps members during their mandatory one-year national service, there has been growing pressure to abolish the NYSC scheme. In response to these concerns, Minister Jamila Bio-Ibrahim clarified that the government has implemented measures to enhance the safety of NYSC members. Notably, corps members will no longer be posted to states deemed unsafe due to ongoing security challenges.
The minister emphasized, “As an immediate intervention of the government and the NYSC as an agency, we have actually stopped posting corps members to the very unsafe states. We have been doing it in the past. There are states we have not been posting corps members to, to ensure their safety.”
Furthermore, Minister Bio-Ibrahim highlighted the collaborative efforts underway to address the security of corps members. Recognizing that security matters require a multi-sectoral approach, she stressed that the NYSC and the ministry are actively engaging with various security agencies. The goal is to implement new strategies and ensure the safety of corps members during their service year.
In addition to the changes in deployment, the minister discussed ongoing efforts to enhance transportation safety for corps members. She revealed plans for group transportation strategies to facilitate secure travel to and from camps and their designated destinations.
This shift in policy reflects the government’s commitment to prioritizing the safety of NYSC members in response to the evolving security landscape across the country.
