In a statement released on Tuesday by Mr. Stanley Nkwocha, the Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Communication, it was noted that Shettima emphasized the need for solidarity among member states facing numerous global challenges. He reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to the goals of the organization while addressing pressing national issues.
“Nigeria remains a principal partner of OACPS, championing our shared values of democracy, diaspora engagement, and development,” Shettima stated. “Our presence here at the UN General Assembly enables us to amplify these priorities on the global stage and explore deeper collaboration opportunities.”
During the meeting, the Vice President addressed Nigeria’s recent designation as a high-risk jurisdiction concerning anti-money laundering, stating, “We’re here to set the record straight and engage in constructive dialogue with our international partners.” He also reaffirmed Nigeria’s support for OACPS initiatives, particularly regarding the ongoing crisis in Haiti.
Shettima acknowledged Kenya’s contribution of 400 troops to Haiti and highlighted Nigeria’s historical commitment to South-South cooperation. “Our technical aid corps program, which has dispatched teachers and doctors to the Caribbean, exemplifies Nigeria’s dedication to uplifting fellow OACPS nations,” he added.
Outlining Nigeria’s strategy, the former Governor of Borno State noted that the country aims to leverage its status as Africa’s most populous nation to advocate for OACPS interests, promote equitable treatment within international financial systems, and strengthen ties with both developing and developed countries. “We’re representing Nigeria’s interests while also championing the collective voice of the OACPS. President Tinubu’s vision for Nigeria aligns closely with the OACPS agenda. In today’s interconnected world, our success is intertwined with that of our partner nations,” he stated.
Earlier, OACPS Secretary-General Georges Chikoti praised Nigeria as a driving force within the organization and highlighted its significant contributions. He expressed confidence in the UN’s commitment to supporting member states facing various challenges and underscored the importance of strengthening partnerships between OACPS member states and the European Union, focusing on essential collaborations in environmental issues, infrastructure, education, and business development.
