Naija News reported that the national grid experienced another collapse on Saturday morning, marking the third incident within a week. NERC attributed the latest failure to an explosion at the Jebba transmission station.
The commission noted that efforts to restore power have made significant progress, with electricity restored in 33 states and the Federal Capital Territory by 1 PM on Saturday.
In a statement posted on its X account, NERC expressed concern over the rising number of grid disturbances leading to extensive outages. The statement detailed, āThe Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission acknowledges the recent increase in grid disturbances that have significantly impacted several states, reversing progress made in reducing infrastructure deficits and improving grid stability.ā
Initial reports indicated that the morning outage was caused by an explosion of a current transformer at the Jebba transmission station at 08:15, which triggered a cascade of shutdowns at power plants due to loss of load.
NERC further explained, āThe unbundling of the System Operator function from the Transmission Company of Nigeria Plc is ongoing, with the expectation that an Independent System Operator will promote better grid management and optimized infrastructure investment.ā
To address the ongoing challenges with the national grid, the Commission plans to hold a public hearing aimed at identifying both immediate and underlying causes of the recurrent disturbances and outages. The date and venue for this hearing will be announced in national newspapers, and stakeholders are encouraged to participate.
