Addressing concerns raised by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) regarding the urgency of this action, Maiyaki affirmed the commission’s commitment to expanding access to higher education. He highlighted the substantial demand for university education in Nigeria, with approximately two million applications received annually by universities, far exceeding available slots for admission.

Maiyaki emphasized the need to address this demand by establishing more universities across the country. He outlined the strategic priorities identified by the NUC, including curriculum development, quality assurance, research and innovation, infrastructure development, and internationalization, aimed at enhancing the nation’s university system.

Regarding curriculum development, Maiyaki mentioned the comprehensive review undertaken by the NUC, aligning academic standards with Nigeria’s goals for a knowledge economy and 21st-century skills. He emphasized the implementation of the Core Curriculum Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS) to cater to evolving educational needs, including training staff and developing instructional materials to support student-centered learning.

In response to the evolving landscape of education delivery, Maiyaki highlighted the NUC’s efforts in Open and Distance Learning (ODL). The commission has developed guidelines to integrate e-learning into traditional teaching methods, ensuring quality and relevance in university education. These guidelines encompass various aspects such as transnational education, e-learning, open educational resources, and the establishment of private open universities.
