Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, has taken legal action against the Speaker of the Niger State Assembly, Abdulmalik Sarkindaji, in response to his proposal to marry off 100 orphaned girls. Kennedy-Ohanenye has filed a petition with the Inspector General of Police and sought a court injunction to halt the speaker’s plans. The girls, who reportedly lost their parents to banditry attacks in the Mariga local government area of the state, are at the center of this controversy.

Sarkindaji had announced his intention to include the marriage of these girls as part of his constituency project, citing it as a means to alleviate their suffering. He committed to covering the dowries for the bridegrooms and providing materials for the mass marriage. However, Kennedy-Ohanenye has strongly condemned these plans, labeling them as “totally unacceptable” and emphasizing the importance of considering the rights and futures of the children involved.

Addressing the media in Abuja, Kennedy-Ohanenye underscored the gravity of the situation and emphasized that an investigation into the matter has been initiated. She highlighted the significance of ensuring the girls’ consent, verifying their ages, and scrutinizing the individuals involved in the marriages. She further stated her intent to pursue legal measures to halt the proceedings until a thorough investigation is conducted.
