The project, co-anchored by Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited and Galaxy Backbone and supervised by the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, seeks to connect all 774 Local Government Areas in Nigeria to the internet. The overarching objective is to promote inclusive development and extend access to digital public infrastructure, particularly in remote areas that may have been underserved or unserved in the past.
Dr. Tijani highlighted the potential impact of the initiative, stating, “Project 774 LG Connectivity will create at least 300 direct jobs as we deploy nationwide and potentially more jobs indirectly from the increase in digital access.” He underscored the project’s significance in delivering efficient public service at the local government level, aligning with the ministry’s strategic goals.
This announcement follows the ministry’s unveiling of the Three Million Technical Talent program in October 2023. The program aims to build Nigeria’s technical talent pool to drive the digital economy and position the country as a net talent exporter. In line with President Bola Tinubu’s vision of creating two million digital jobs by 2025, the program’s first phase, executed in collaboration with the National Information Technology Development Agency, involves multiple stakeholders such as fellows, training providers, partners, and placement organizations.
