Federal High Court Sets Date For Suspended CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele’s Arraignment

A federal high court in Lagos has scheduled the arraignment of Godwin Emefiele, the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), for July 25.

Hearing notices have been sent to the counsels involved in the case, with Joseph Daudu, a senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN), leading the defendant’s legal team.

Emefiele was suspended by President Bola Tinubu on June 9 and was subsequently asked to transfer his responsibilities to Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi, the CBN deputy governor, operations directorate.

The following day, the Department of State Services (DSS) announced that Emefiele was in their custody for investigative reasons.

Since his arrest, the suspended CBN governor has been held in DSS custody. On July 13, the DSS confirmed that they had filed charges against Emefiele, accusing him of possessing firearms.

The charges include the alleged possession of a single-barrel shotgun without a license and 123 rounds of live ammunition (cartridges) without a license, both of which are violations of the Firearms Act.

Emefiele had previously filed a bail application before the court, seeking self-recognizance bail. He argued that the charges against him were bailable, emphasizing that he has no criminal record and should be presumed innocent until proven guilty. He also asserted that he is not a flight risk and would cooperate with the court during the trial.

The defendant expressed his readiness to provide responsible sureties as required by the court and requested bail to have adequate time to prepare his defense, considering that the investigations had been concluded and there was no likelihood of interference on his part.
