The Federal Government and Edo State have strengthened their labour-development ties following a high-level engagement in Abuja aimed at expanding skills training, job creation, and workplace safety across the state.

Leading the Edo delegation, the Honourable Commissioner for Labour and Productivity, Hon. Godwin Eshieshi, met with the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Hon. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, to advance the Labour Employment and Empowerment Programme (LEEP) and the Renewed Hope Job Centres initiative.

During the meeting, Minister Onyejeocha reaffirmed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive for deeper collaboration with subnational governments, noting that modern skills acquisition, elimination of casualisation, and improved occupational safety have become top national priorities under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

According to her, the LEEP programme remains a strategic driver for preparing young Nigerians with market-ready skills, promoting decent work, and addressing unemployment-driven insecurity across the country.

Responding, Hon. Eshieshi expressed gratitude to Edo State Governor, Sen. Monday Okpebholo, for establishing the Ministry of Labour and Productivity, describing it as a transformative decision that ensures Edo youths and women have direct access to federal opportunities in skills and job creation.

He emphasised the urgent need to tackle occupational health hazards, stressing that Edo workers deserve safe and dignified working conditions as the state continues to attract investments from multinational firms in oil, mining, agriculture, and industry.

Also present at the meeting was the Chief Whip of the Edo State House of Assembly, Hon. Husseni Mustapha Lecky, who commended the LEEP initiative and described skills acquisition as the “game changer” capable of reducing insecurity, cultism, and youth vices.

Minister Onyejeocha further disclosed that a nationwide state of emergency has been declared on occupational health and safety, with sanctions set to be enforced against defaulters, alongside renewed efforts to end casualisation in both the public and private sectors.

At the close of discussions, Hon. Eshieshi lauded the minister’s commitment to a stronger federal–state partnership, noting that Edo’s unique economic landscape makes it a natural hub for job expansion, artisan development, and labour reforms.

The renewed collaboration is expected to accelerate the transition from skills to sustainable jobs, ensuring that no community in Edo State is left behind in the implementation of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
