FG Expands NYSC Opportunities, Allows Service In Banks And Oil SectorThe Federal Government has lifted restrictions on the deployment of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, enabling them to be posted to private sector organisations, including banks and oil companies. This policy change, announced in a memo dated November 18, 2024, was issued by the Minister of Youth Development, Comrade Ayodele Olawande.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The new directive, effective from the 2024 Batch ‘C Orientation Course, aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s initiative to tackle the rising youth unemployment crisis. Under the previous policy, introduced by former Youth Development Minister Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, corps members were restricted to serving in public sector areas such as education, agriculture, health, and infrastructure. The aim was to prevent potential exploitation by private companies while strengthening public institutions.

However, the government now believes this policy limited the opportunities for corps members to gain relevant work experience and practical skills, leaving them underprepared for the job market. Olawande emphasized that the updated policy would allow NYSC members to apply their academic knowledge in real-world settings, improving their employability.

The new initiative also prioritizes posting corps members to high-demand sectors in cities like Abuja and Lagos, encouraging collaboration between the public and private sectors to bridge the skills gap. The memo states: “There is an urgent need to review this policy to expand the opportunities and access for corps members to serve in areas relevant to their fields of study.”

The directive goes on to state that the lifting of restrictions will apply to postings in select banks and other private sector organizations, including those in oil and gas. The changes will take effect with the commencement of the 2024 Batch ‘C Orientation Course, and will affect the posting and distribution of corps members to their Places of Primary Assignment.

The previously revoked policy was seen as a barrier to gaining practical experience, which the government believes is crucial for preparing corps members for success in the workforce.
