FG Unveils Upgraded NIN Portal For Nigerians Abroad

The Federal Government has upgraded its diaspora enrolment platform to make it easier for Nigerians living abroad to register for the National Identification Number (NIN).

So far, over 122 million Nigerians have been enrolled in the NIN database. Lagos leads with 12.7 million registrations, followed by Kano (10.4 million), Kaduna (6.9 million), Ogun (4.9 million), Oyo (4.5 million), and Katsina (4 million). At the lower end, Bayelsa recorded 767,620, Ebonyi 999,991, and Ekiti 1.1 million.

Gender data shows men account for 66.9 million registrations (56.5%), while women make up 51.5 million (43.5%).

Nigeria is still behind schedule on its World Bank-backed Digital Identity for National Development (ID4D) project, having missed the June 30, 2024 deadline to reach 148 million registrations. The target date has now been extended to June 30, 2026.

According to the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), the upgraded system will offer a “seamless, secure, and efficient” service for Nigerians overseas. Diaspora Front-End Partners (FEPs) have been trained on the new system and must activate their enrolment licences within 48 hours.

NIMC apologised for inconveniences during the upgrade and urged NIN holders to download the NINAuth app from iOS or Google Play Store for instant verification, privacy control, and secure authentication.
