This was highlighted by the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, during the inauguration of the Inter-Agency Committee on Fuels in Abuja. The committee’s mandate is to promote the use of low sulphur fuel and CNG across the country.

Lawal assured that the government would continue to raise public awareness about the environmental benefits of these cleaner fuels. He explained that the shift towards low sulphur fuel would help reduce air pollution and mitigate the health risks associated with high sulphur content in petroleum products.

He pointed out that high sulphur levels in fuel contribute to severe weather events, air pollution, and climate change. These environmental issues, in turn, have significant public health impacts, such as increased asthma cases, respiratory diseases, and lung conditions. Lawal stressed that addressing these challenges requires collective action to ensure cleaner fuels, a healthier environment, and better public health for future generations.

The minister also noted that the revised Nigeria Industrial Standards for sulphur content in petrol, diesel, and kerosene were made possible through the efforts of the Ministry of Environment and collaboration with key stakeholders.

In her remarks, Mrs. Bahijjatu Abubakar, the Director of Pollution Control and Environmental Health at the Federal Ministry of Environment, thanked the committee members for their commitment to supporting the ministry’s goal of achieving clean air and a healthier environment.
