FG Warns Of Inevitable Power Grid CollapseThe Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has emphasized the necessity of establishing regional power grids to address the frequent collapses of Nigeria’s national grid. Speaking on Wednesday during the launch of Hexing Livoltek, an electricity meter manufacturing company in Lekki, Lagos, he highlighted the deteriorating state of the nation’s power infrastructure.

Adelabu noted that the current reliance on a single national grid makes the entire country vulnerable to disruptions. He stated that the decentralization of the power sector, facilitated by the Electricity Act signed by President Bola Tinubu in 2023, will allow subnational governments to participate more actively in electricity generation, transmission, and distribution.

“This Electricity Act has decentralised power, enabling state and local governments to engage in these processes. A disturbance in the national grid currently affects all 36 states, which is not sustainable. We need to gradually develop regional and possibly state-specific grids, so issues in one grid will not impact the entire nation,” he explained.

Addressing the ongoing grid collapses, Adelabu underscored the inevitability of such incidents without significant investment in the sector. He expressed concern about the dilapidated condition of the infrastructure, stating, “The infrastructure is in a deplorable state. Until we overhaul it, we will continue to experience trip-offs and collapses.”

Adelabu mentioned that there had been no grid collapse in the past four months until a partial collapse occurred recently. “Our goal is to improve response times when issues arise. Many transformers are decades old, and expecting them to perform optimally is unrealistic. We require substantial investment to modernize our infrastructure,” he asserted.

While unveiling the new company, Adelabu praised Hexing Livoltek for its commitment to Nigeria at a time when many companies are withdrawing. He described the event as a milestone towards a more efficient and equitable electricity sector, focusing on local content and job creation.

Hexing Group’s CEO, Robert Liang, expressed excitement about expanding into Nigeria, viewing it as a crucial step towards advancing clean energy in the country. “This is more than just opening an office; it’s a commitment to a future driven by clean energy,” Liang stated, highlighting the company’s extensive experience in smart energy systems and digital infrastructure.

The PUNCH reported that the national grid, which experienced collapses earlier in the week, had been restored by Wednesday evening.
