The First Lady underscored the importance of not only drawing inspiration from the sacrifices made by those dedicated to fostering peace but also recommitting to the principles of unity, comprehension, and cooperation epitomized by the United Nations.
During this poignant occasion, Mrs. Tinubu was joined by Valdimir Voronkov, the Under Secretary General of the UN’s Office of Counterterrorism. Voronkov reiterated the necessity for global solidarity and support for the numerous victims of terrorism worldwide, which continues to threaten global peace and security, leaving countless individuals as survivors and casualties in its wake.
Voronkov observed, “Nigeria is acutely aware of the repercussions of terrorism within its borders and beyond. Certain parts of Africa have experienced the highest impact of terrorism over many years.”
He also reminded attendees that even the United Nations itself has not been impervious to terrorism, recalling the tragic attack on the Canal Hotel in Baghdad, Iraq, on August 19, 2003, commemorated just two weeks prior.
The solemn and succinct wreath-laying ceremony was attended by prominent figures from various United Nations agencies operating in Nigeria.
