The apprehension of Chinaza Philip-Okoye in Abuja has taken a perplexing turn as the alleged kidnapper, now in police custody, vehemently denies any involvement in abduction, instead asserting that he is a car robber. During a media parade of criminal suspects at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police command on Wednesday, January 24, Chinaza Philip-Okoye maintained his innocence, addressing the public and specifically extending greetings to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Emphasizing the importance of recording his statements, he asserted, “Anything I say today, let it be recorded. I know some people will say I am lying. The only thing I am going to say is the truth and nothing but the truth.”

In a bid to clarify his involvement, Chinaza avowed, “Between God and man; the God that created Heaven and earth. I’m not a kidnapper. I haven’t kidnapped anybody.” He revealed that his criminal activities centered around stealing cars, particularly operating at night and transporting the stolen vehicles to Kano for sale.

Elaborating on the specific incident leading to his arrest, he explained, “That night, our aim was to rob the man and take his car, but I was surprised that after we collected his car, yellow, who is like our leader, asked the man to enter the back of the car. I didn’t know why he did that, and I couldn’t argue with him, so we were driving to Kano before the police caught up with us in Kaduna where I was arrested.”

The backdrop of Akinyemi’s alleged abduction unfolded when the kidnappers drove through Rita Lori, Garki, Abuja, prompting the FCT Police Command to alert all police formations in the FCT and neighboring states. The FCT anti-kidnapping operatives pursued them into Kaduna State, resulting in the escape of other gang members and the arrest of Chinaza Philip-Okoye, who was shot at during the operation.

Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, who paraded Chinaza on Saturday, disclosed that the gang, attempting to flee to Kano, had a stroke of misfortune at a filling station in Kaduna. Three members managed to escape, leaving Chinaza as the sole apprehended suspect. The victim, Segun Akinyemi, was rescued unharmed, and his hijacked vehicle was successfully recovered.

Adejobi revealed, “It was discovered that Chinaza Philip Okoye Michael and his accomplices had earlier been arrested sometime in November 2023 and charged for similar offences, at the High Court, Kwali, Abuja, but went back to committing even worse crimes while on court bail.” This revelation adds a layer of complexity to Chinaza’s criminal history, underscoring the challenges faced by law enforcement in curbing repeat offenses. The video below captures the unfolding events, shedding light on the dramatic arrest and the circumstances surrounding the alleged car robbery.
