FirstNews Editorial Chief Steps Down Amid Apology Controversy Involving Gbajabiamila

After issuing an apology to Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, the Editor of FirstNews, Segun Olatunji, has resigned from his position. Olatunji’s departure comes in the wake of a tumultuous period, during which he spent 14 days in the custody of the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) in Abuja due to a report concerning Gbajabiamila.

The controversial report, titled “How Gbajabiamila attempted to corner $30bn, 66 houses traced to Sabiu,” was authored by Olatunji, leading to legal threats from Gbajabiamila against both Olatunji and FirstNews. In response, FirstNews Management issued an apology, acknowledging the dissemination of “falsehoods and fabricated stories” sourced from an unreliable party.

In his resignation letter, Olatunji cited concerns for his safety and that of his family as primary reasons for stepping down. While expressing dissatisfaction with the apology, he expressed optimism that the truth surrounding the incident would eventually come to light. Olatunji also called upon FirstNews Management to address outstanding salary payments owed to him.

As he bids farewell to his role as General Editor of FirstNews, Olatunji thanked the company’s management for the opportunity to contribute over the past four years, highlighting his hope for a swift resolution to the situation.
