Forensic Investigation Ordered By Reps Committee For UNICAL, UNIPORT, And Others

The House of Representatives Committee on University Education has decided to initiate a forensic investigation into the financial activities of several universities, including the University of Calabar, University of Port Harcourt, Federal University of Petroleum Resources Effurun, and Federal University Uyo, among others. Committee Chairman Abubakar Hassan Fulata announced the move after the lawmakers reviewed the universities’ performance. He noted that discrepancies and irreconcilable data in the documents presented necessitated a thorough forensic examination.

The investigation will also extend to other institutions visited, such as Federal University Otuoke and Nigerian Maritime University Okerenkoko. The committee has advised newly established universities, including Federal University of Medical Health Science Kwale and Federal University of Technology Ikot Abasi, to avoid the pitfalls of older universities, particularly concerning noncompliance with federal principles and the management of internally generated revenue.

Fulata revealed that the committee had recently toured over 30 federal universities across 21 states and the Federal Capital Territory. Despite logistical challenges, including difficult travel conditions and extended journeys by road and sea, the committee remains committed to its oversight role.

He described the travel difficulties, including navigating poor roads and high seas, as significant but manageable obstacles. Fulata emphasized that the oversight visits provided crucial first-hand insights into the universities’ challenges and will aid in devising effective solutions.

Committee member Victor Afam Ogene emphasized that the committee’s work is not aimed at witch-hunting but is conducted in line with constitutional responsibilities. He stressed the importance of cooperation between the parliament and other government branches for national development.

Fellow committee member Blessing Amadi urged university managements to prioritize student affairs. She criticized the allocation of substantial funds to legal issues while neglecting critical areas such as teaching aids that directly impact students.
