Lamido said a focus on issue-based politics would help rebuild national unity and provide lasting solutions to the country’s pressing challenges.

He made the appeal on Saturday while receiving PDP governorship candidates from Gombe, Kano, Bauchi and Yobe states at his residence in Bamaina, Birnin Kudu Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

Addressing the delegation, Lamido stressed that political campaigns should be driven by ideas and programmes rather than criticism of individuals.

“We want to redirect and restore the culture of politics in terms of issues, not personality,” he said.

“We must know that we are all Nigerians. That’s very important. We are citizens of this country, we all love Nigeria.

“It’s not about what someone did; it’s about what you will give as an individual or political party. What are you going to offer Nigerians?”

The former governor identified insecurity, education, the economy and corruption among the major issues political parties should prioritise in their campaigns.

“These are the issues we will be campaigning on so that by the time we win government, it will truly be a government of the people,” he added.

Speaking on behalf of the visiting delegation, the PDP governorship candidate in Gombe State and former Minister of Communications, Dr. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, praised Lamido for what he described as his leadership, consistency and willingness to speak candidly on national issues.

Pantami said the delegation visited to seek Lamido’s guidance and counsel as they prepare for the political contests ahead.

“Nigeria and Nigerians need leaders like Sule Lamido who stand with the masses and possess the courage to speak the truth to anyone, regardless of their position or status,” Pantami said.
