Former Campaign DG Speculates On Peter Obi’s Potential Return To PDP, Leaving LP Behind

Akin Osuntokun, a former Director-General of the Labour Party (LP) Presidential Campaign Council, suggested that Peter Obi, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, might only rejoin the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) if he’s assured of the presidential ticket in 2027. Osuntokun, speaking on Arise News, emphasized that Obi’s return to the PDP hinges on circumstances and assurances from the party’s influential figures.

Osuntokun highlighted that Obi’s acceptance of rejoining the PDP would be contingent upon securing the party’s presidential ticket in 2027. He explained, “It’s unrealistic to expect someone who has previously run for president to accept a subordinate position like a running mate.” He pointed out Obi’s significant political appeal among Nigerians, particularly the youth demographic, which could be jeopardized if he were to become a running mate.

Regarding Obi’s potential return to the PDP, Osuntokun stated, “The only scenario where Peter Obi might contemplate returning to the PDP is if he’s offered the party’s presidential ticket. Otherwise, it would be a futile endeavor.” He emphasized that Obi’s support base could diminish if he assumes a lesser role within the PDP.

Recalling Atiku Abubakar’s recent remarks about supporting Obi as the PDP’s South-East presidential candidate in 2027, Osuntokun highlighted the possibility of a PDP-LP merger ahead of the 2027 elections.
