Peterside emphasized that Peseiro’s defensive tactics alone justified his dismissal as the Portuguese tactician.

Peseiro guided the Super Eagles to the 2023 AFCON final against Ivory Coast, which took place on Sunday, February 11.

Throughout the tournament, Peseiro consistently favored a defensive approach, placing significant pressure on the team during most of the seven games played.

While this strategy proved effective in the group stage, where the Super Eagles conceded just one goal in three matches, and in subsequent knockout matches against Cameroon and Angola, it faltered notably in the semi-final against South Africa.

Despite this glaring flaw, Peseiro persisted with the same defensive tactics in the final against Ivory Coast, resulting in a 2-1 defeat for Nigeria.

In an interview with Channels Television on Monday, February 12, Peterside argued that merely reaching the AFCON final should not be sufficient grounds to retain Peseiro as the head coach.

“When people asked me yesterday if the coach reached the finals, what do you think? I said, fire him!” Peterside stated.
