The reason for this act remains unclear. Niger, a landlocked West African state, has experienced political instability, with four coups and numerous other attempts on power since gaining independence from France in 1960.
Despite the situation, there was no apparent abnormal military deployment or gunfire during the incident. Bazoum, who was democratically elected in 2021, is a close ally of France. Reacting on Twitter, Bashir Ahmad called on all democracy and Africa supporters to strongly condemn the coup.
He emphasized the importance of upholding democracy and respecting the will of the people, urging everyone to stand together for peace, stability, and the preservation of democratic values in Africa and beyond.
