Three suspected thieves who had been causing terror among the student communities in Adakolo, Felele, Bassa Village, and Crusher suburb areas of Lokoja, the capital of Kogi State, have been remanded by a Chief Magistrate Court in Lokoja.
These suspects, identified as Abbas Salisu, Gimba Ibrahim, and Mamud Lawal Kwarawho, were apprehended in connection to recent assaults on these student-populated areas, where they allegedly robbed individuals of their valuable possessions, including smartphones, computers, and other items.
During the proceedings at the Chief Magistrate Court in Lokoja, the suspects, who had previously admitted to stealing 33 phones, were arraigned by the Department of State Service. The prosecuting counsel, Olanrewaju Yahaya, presented four-count charges against them, which included criminal conspiracy, theft of phones valued at One Million Naira, dishonesty, receiving stolen properties, and association with a gang of thieves targeting students from Kogi State Polytechnic and Federal University Lokoja.
Urging the court to detain the accused individuals at the Koton Karfe Medium Custodian Centre pending further investigation and the hearing of the case, Yahaya emphasized the gravity of the offenses.
Upon pleading not guilty to the charges, the trial Chief Magistrate, Abdullahi Mopah, ordered the suspects to be remanded in the Koto Karfe custodial center. The case was adjourned until the 9th of May, 2024, for a subsequent hearing.
In a separate incident, the Chief Magistrate Court also remanded Austin Obaje in the Koton-Karfe Medium Correctional Centre on allegations of impersonation, extortion, and fraud.
Obaje faced charges for allegedly impersonating and consistently exploiting the name of the Department of State Services to deceive unsuspecting members of the public. He was accused of fraudulently obtaining the sum of three hundred thousand Naira from Dr. Simeon Oyigun Omakoji, falsely claiming to have been sent by the State Director of the Department of Service, Mr. Tosin Ajayi.
Furthermore, Obaje was accused of engaging in extortion by leveraging his fabricated association with the Department of State Services.
